Our Fleet Department has a 12-month temporary full-time opportunity, with possibility for extension, for an experienced and motivated Trades 2 - Mechanic to join our team. You will be responsible for maintaining and repairing a varied fleet consisting of approximately 225 Public Works, Fire / Rescue and other specialized vehicles. This is commercial transport/heavy duty mechanical work at the journeyman level, involving maintenance, repair and overhaul of a wide variety of vehicles and equipment both in the shop and in the field.

The preferred candidate will be proficient in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of diesel and gas engines plus transmissions all with electronic control, along with a thorough knowledge and understanding of air brake, electrical and electronic systems. A minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience is preferred and the successful candidate must possess their own hand tools. Experience with welding and small scale fabrication would be considered an asset.

The successful candidate will at a minimum have completed Grade 10 and possess Interprovincial Red Seal or Trades Qualification for the Province of British Columbia as a Commercial Transport or Heavy Duty Mechanic. Preference will be given to candidates who hold a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate and a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Endorsement. Candidates who possess Interprovincial Red Seal or Trades Qualification for the Province of British Columbia as an Automotive Service Technician with a Commercial Vehicle Inspection Certificate will also be considered if they can provide evidence of experience of work involving the maintenance and repair of super duty type trucks.

The District of North Vancouver supports continued education and development in areas of interest for all of its employees. The Fleet Department provides great opportunities for training including dealer training on newly purchased fleet equipment.

The hourly rate for this unionized position is $39.55 per hour (2019 Rate) plus $0.75 per hour shift differential, tool allowance and an extended benefits package including pension. Hours of work are Monday to Friday from 6:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. with some Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on a 2 week rotation. Hours are inclusive of an extra ½ hour worked per day to provide additional day’s off on a 5-5-4 pattern.
